foul tick caught by catcher -softball

Question
With a runner on 1st, 1 out, girl stealing on pitch, 2 strikes on batter and the batter foul ticks the pitch into the catchers glove.  Ump behind plate calls foul ball, catcher throws to second and nails girl attempting to steal.  Girl is called out at second.  My question is shouldn't it be a dead ball when it was declared a foul ball by the ump?  Our stealer girl heard foul ball and slowed up thinking she would have to go back to 1st.

Answer
Hi Jeff,

Just for others, a foul "tip" and a foul ball are not the same.  Among other things a foul tip is a live ball and a foul ball is a dead ball.

If it was a foul ball, the ball is dead, the batter is not out, r1 is returned to 1st.

So I'm wondering why the coach did not calmly discuss with the PU, the fact they called it a foul ball, the ball is dead and the R1 cannot under any stretch of the rules be out?

Also upon discussion if he claimed it was a caught foul tip and my batter is out, why he called it a foul ball and put my runner in jeopardy?

I wasn't there so I don't know the answer to these questions
