Playtime

Question
Are there any rules that govern playtime for 10 and under girls softball? My daughter plays on a team with 11 other girls, the coach will sub her and the other extra girl in after 2 to 3 innings but only in the outfield never at a key position. The other girl confronted the coach and she told her that both of them were not that good (she actually said this) Having coached girls soccer I understand the role as a coach, but regardless of the skill of a player at that age I believe that it is more important that they show up for practices and games and try to have a good time, only when you have an opportunity to play in a game/scrimmage will you be able to increase your skill level as a player, not riding the bench.

Answer
Kenneth,
Unless your league has a rule governing play time, there is no rule that governs play time in softball
Practice's and scrimmages are designed to increase a players ability, this is where the get to learn the fundamentals. Games are for applying these fundamentals.
Now, I totally understand the play time issue having been the one making the decisions as to who plays and who sits, believe me it's a tough one.
I try to start my best kids first then work in those with lesser ability as the game develops.
The best advise that I can give, and I tell my own players this, is to make it so easy for me too choose. This would mean that the player to work harder and get better.
Don't worry, she will progress and get better as she grows, I've been down that road three times myself. Good luck, Coach Suthe.
