OVERTHROW ASA Rule 8-5-G, Clarification
2016/7/15 17:26:42
Question
is the dugout definitly out of play as soon as the ball enters it?
What if it enters then bounces right back out?
Does it matter if it's the offense or defense dugout?
P.S. this is a non-official weekend league, but we do go by ASA rules.
What happened was: I was the HP Blue, the outfielder overthrew the ball into the offensive dugout(untouched by anybody else), I immediately called dead ball. I awarded the BR 3rdB because (in my opinion) the BR had already rounded 1B by the time the ball left the throwers hand. There were two arguments, one was that she only gets 1 base and the other was 2 bases from home.
Was I right / wrong. I think I understand the rule pretty good, but would like a professional opinion.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Barry,
Is the dugout definitely out of play as soon as the ball enters it? yes, dead ball
What if it enters then bounces right back out? doesn't matter
Does it matter if it's the offense or defense dugout? No
There were two arguments, one was that she only gets 1 base and the other was 2 bases from home. Neither argument is valid
Was I right / wrong. I think I understand the rule pretty good, but would like a professional opinion. 2 bases are always awarded from the last base touched at the time the throw was released RS38 so it looks to me like you were correct
