bunting (fair or foul ball)

2016/7/15 17:26:33

Question
In our game tonight, one girl squared and bunted the ball. It landed fair and then rolled over the first base line but was picked up with the pitcher standing fair. It was called a foul ball. Was that the correct call or was it fair?

Answer
Hi Erica,

It never, ever, never matters where the fielder is on fair/foul.  It only matters where the ball is.

On batted balls between home and 1st or 3rd and on balls in flight if the ball is on or over fair territory when 1st touched it is a fair ball.

Likewise if the ball is on or over foul territory when 1st touched it is a foul ball.
