Question
On a line drive foul ball towards third, the base coach reached up and caught the ball. The field ref called the batter out based on coaches interference. the umpire then overturned it and called it a foul ball, based on the fact that the third baseman didn't seem to make an attempt to catch the ball. Is this an out or Foul and why?
Cheers
Answer
Whether the batter is out on this one is a judgement call.
The batter is out if the base coach actually interfered with an attempt to catch the ball by the third basemen. If there was no attempt to play the ball this simply becomes a foul ball when the third base coach catches it.
There is another thing happening here that needs to discussed. That batter is out unless the base umpire changes his/her call. No umpire has the authority to overturn another umpires call. The proper thing for the plate umpire to do in this situation is to shut up. It is up to the offensive coach to ask the base umpire to request help from the plate umpire. They can then have a discussion about what happened and the base umpire can change their call if they wish.
