Bunt, ball or strike

2016/7/15 17:24:33

Question
The batter squares to bunt, the pitch comes in out of the strike zone and the batter does not with draw the bat or make an attemnpt at the ball.  According to NFHS is this a ball or a swinging strike.

Answer
For there to be a strike (not called) there has to be an offer at the ball.  This is why there is not a strike called when a girl is getting out of the way of a wild pitch and her bat moves through the strike zone.  She wasn't trying to hit the ball.

When I am looking at checked swings, I don't look for how far the batter went, I look to see if she stopped her attempt before the pitch got to the plate.

Simply squareing to bunt is not an offer.  If the ball goes by and the batter just holds the bat there, that is not an offer.  She must acutually attempt to make contact.

A smart coach will teach his batters to pull the bat back on a bunt that they don't want to help the umpire make the correct call.  I wouldn't want to leave the decision of whether she offered up to umpire judgement.

So the short answer to your question, ball.
