Slow pitch strike zone

2016/7/15 17:23:27

Question
I pitch in a women's rec. slow pitch softball league.  The umpires vary significantly on their strike zones and I was wondering what the official strike zone consisted of.  Does the shape of the back of the plate make a difference for the strike zone?  Where does a strike right down the middle land and what about the black around the plate?

Answer
HI Deborah,

The strike zone is the space over any part of the plate between the front knee and back shoulder of the batter in a normal batting position adjacent to the plate.

Does the shape of the back of the plate make a difference for the strike zone?  No

Where does a strike right down the middle land. depends on the umpire but by the book see the 1st sentence.
