Out of the baseline?

2016/7/15 17:20:55

Question
3rd base runner advances home on a fly ball caught by the 1st baseman. 1st baseman overthrows the catcher. The 3rd base runner crosses home and heads toward her 1st base dugout. She then realizes that she should have never run and takes the shortest route across the field (between home and the pitchers mound)back to 3rd base. Is she out for not following her path back to 3rd? What's the call here.

Answer
When running the bases in reverse to correct a base running error, all bases must be touched in reverse order.  Rule 8-3.2

Home plate is a base.  While the rule book doesn't specifically state home plate is a base, as far as I can find.  There are rules covering four base awards.  Thus home plate has to be a base.

Sorry for the delay in answering this.

Yes she should be out.
