Appeallable Play

2016/7/15 17:20:52

Question
Ball either hits batter or hits bat.  Home plate umpire calls foul ball, ruling the ball hit the bat prior to hitting the batter.

The offensive coach asks for him to appeal to the base umpire, who overturns the call and says it hit the batter first.

My feeling is that once the strike is called, it is not appealable, similar to a check swing that is called a strike cannot be appealed.

Thanks for your answer.

Answer
Hi Larry,

this is a little different than a checked swing.  On a cs the mechanic is if there is doubt to call it a ball and go for help if the catcher asks.  A strike call on a cs has no doubt by the PU and therefore no reason to ask for help.

On this play obviously the PU wasn't exactly sure what happened, made a call (he didn't call it a strike but rather a foul ball) and then went  for help when asked.  I have no problem with that.
