Question
This is the type of play that seems only to happen at the younger age groups.

Bases loaded 1 out.  Ground ball is hit to short near second base.

The shortstop fields and immediately tags the runner at second, but the runner had not left and her foot was in contact with second base when the tag was applied.  The shortstop then touched second to force out the runner coming from first to second.  Meanwhile the runner at second never left contact with the bag.

The ump calls both runners out.  Was this the correct call?

Answer
Hi Tim,

this would be the correct call as R2 is forced from the base and is no longer legally entitled to it.  They can be legally tagged while on the base.

Tagging R2 and then stepping on the bag for a force out on R3 (coming from 1st) is a very very smart play at this level.
