Question
We play for fun with experienced players from other teams as umps. Please tell me how this play should have been called.
Bases loaded, two outs, batter hits a triple. Three runners come home batter is now on third base. Opposing team appeals saying the batter did not touch first base. The umpire called him out. How may runs if any should score?
Answer
Hi Allen,
Zero runs would score. Anytime the b-r doesn't safely advance to 1st w/ 2 outs, no run can score. And they didn't safely advance to 1st because they did not touch the bag.
The same no runs could be true for other runners in this play. Say R3 is appealed for missing 2nd. Because this is a force situation on R3 at 2nd and the 3rd out, no runs would score.
Same rules apply for R1 and R2 if they missed the base they were forced to.
Let's just take it a step further. B-R is appealed for missing 2nd in your play. This is not considered a force out and all runs would score if they touched hp before the appeal.
2 more... R3 misses 3rd and is appealed. 2 runs would score, R1 and R2.
B1 hits a hr instead of a triple w/ 2out, but R3 missed 3rd and is appealed. 2 runs would score, R1 and R2 but not B1, because on an appeal like this no subsequent runner to R3 may score.
