avoiding a tag

2016/7/15 17:17:07

Question
Tom,
Can a runner avoid the tag at home plate and run around the cather when the cather is standing there ready to tag her out?

Answer
Although there is not a rule preventing it, in reality not really.

A runner my not vary more than three feet from a path defined by their position and the base they are going to.  If they attempt to avoid a tag at home by running around the catcher, they most likely will get called out for running out of the base path.

The best thing to do in this situation is slide and hope the catcher drops the ball or possibly a hook slde.
