Illigal Mitt

Question
Here's a weird one, I know the rule, but not sure about the penalty. During a high School FP game with a r on 2nd the batter hit a fly ball to the 2nd baseman which she caught for the 1st out. The coach argued the call because the 2nd baseman was using a catchers mitt instead of the glove. After a conference, the batter was awarded a triple and the runner on second was allowed to score. Is this penalty correct?
Answer
Hi JR,
Not a weird one at all. I don't know what org or assoc runs your program but is ASA or Fed play any defensive player may use a mitt or glove. There would be no violation.
In the past when there was a rule in ASA the penalty was the offensive manager had the option of taking the result of the play or putting their batter (and runners) back w/ the same count as before the play.
The only penalty I know of where the b-r is awarded 3rd in a situation such as this is when a fielder intentionally contacts or catches a fair batted ball w/ any part of the uniform or equipment detached from it's proper place (throwing a glove and contacting the ball ie)
