Batted ball hit runner on base.

Question
Girls Fastpitch 14U. Runner on 1st (R1) and batter hits a ground ball to the second baseman who is playing way in. Ball goes by the second baseman without making contact with her and after it goes by hits R1. Is it a dead ball and R1 is out or is it still alive? Also would it make a difference if batted ball had make contact with fielder before hitting R1?

Thanks very much,

Answer
Hi Jose,

your question title says "Batted ball hit runner on base." but your question has R1 advancing from 1st to 2nd so I'll assume that's what you mean.  Being hit on base has different outcomes.

In play 1 R1 would NOT be out if they were hit by a fair batted ball after it had passed an infield (exc F1) unless in the umpire's judgment another player has an opportunity to make an out. In this situation probably not so live ball and we play on.

2 R1 would NOT be out after the ball touches or is touched by any defensive player (deflected ball) and R1 could not avoid contact the with the ball.  Again, live ball we play on.
