Question
Can a coach appeal a call made by the home plate umpire made at home plate? A pitch was made it was a wild pitch and of course went behind catchers head, there was a runner on third running home after the pitch was behind catcher. Catcher got the ball, pitcher went to home plate and stood by the plate towards the pitchers mound, the catcher jumped over home plate and tagged the runner out, the homeplate umpire called the girl out. The runners' coach said that the pitcher was obstructing the plate, mean while her other batter was still in the batters box. The umpired overturned the call, and counted the run, even though the girl never touched then plate and was tagged out three feet before home plate.
Answer
Hi Kristi, w/out seeing the play it's impossible for me to determine what happened and what the proper call should be.
If F1 was blocking the plate w/out the ball we could have obstruction.
This isn't really an appeal by the coach but rather a re-ev (going for help) of what happened by the umpire. The BU might have had a better view of where the pitcher was and it's effect on R1 and told the PU what they had.
With obstruction we award the base(s) that we feel the runner would have made had there been no obstruction. In this case the PU felt the runner would have made home.
