Softball Base Running

Question
In a game of slow pitch softball, with a runner on 1st,the ball is hit deep to the out field and caught for the 2nd out. Runner goes from 1st to 2nd and touches 2nd then returns to 1st as the ball is caught. On appeal the ball is brought to 2nd, I believe the runner at 1st is out because when he makes contact with 2nd (touch or rounding)he is entitled to the next base in consecutive order if he must go back to first he should touch the base twice or better he should have stopped just short of the bag in the first place. The umpire said he did not round the bag and called him safe. ??? bad call???
Answer
Hi Bob,
IF R1 rounded 2nd base and was advancing to 3rd, he would have to retouch 2nd on the way back to 1st, that's called running the bases in reverse order. Simply touching or standing on 2nd and then retreating to 1st on the catch is nothing illegal.
