Question
My daughter is a lefty has been practicing at 2nd base since she started playing (about 2 years now). Now one of the coaches is stating that it's not a good position for her because she is lefty. I've been doing some research and get conflicting results. Some "experts" claim that 2nd base is good for her, while others disagree with that.
So now she has it in her to try catcher because of the the coach told her. Is this a good or better position for her? I would hate to invest a lot of money and time into her being a catcher if it is not a good position for her as a lefty.... thoughts??
Answer
Hi Carol,
Left-handed players are usually the exception to the rules of the game. However, the one constant when it comes to left-handed players is that it is VERY helpful to have a lefty playing first base...always. It's where I try and put my left-handed players. Of course skill level always comes into play as well.
Second base wouldn't be my first choice for a good lefty. Playing catcher is a decent position for her because more often than not, she'll be making the throw to first rather than third base (usually) and being left-handed there would make a difference.
Please keep in mind that these are generalities because I don't know her skill level or the skill levels of the other players on the team. Trust her coach.
I would personally see if she would prefer first base or outfield.
Good luck!
