Outfielders in Softball

2016/7/15 17:14:12

Question
Is there a limit to how many outfielders can play in co-ed softball? I played last year and there were 5 of us in the outfield. They called us "short-fielders", which were in between 1st and 2nd and slightly behind the Shortstop. Thanks

Answer
Hi Tina,

Co-ed probably has more local rule exceptions than any other game of softball.

In strict ASA play you must have 4 outfielders, 2 of each, not more or less.  You can have shortfielders or rovers but they must defend the area that outfielder's normally play and they count towards the four.

Infielders must also defend the field normally covered by infielders.

both of those rules mean the umpire can move a player(s) if they want.
