Question
we wer in a tournament this past Saturday and the batter slab bunted, stepping as she hit and came outof the batters box, we challenged it with the ump who told us that it is legal to come out of the batters box forward toward pitchers mound as long as you don't go past the front line of the batters box by more than four feet.  I have never heard this rule and it sounds crazy to me .  What do you know about this.

Answer
Hi Nancy,

the bb extends 4' in front of the a line drawn through the middle of the plate, maybe that's what they meant.  If the batter's foot is touching any part of the line with any part of the foot 4' in front of the box and the other foot is in the air, then are still in the box.

You cannot have both feet completely outside of the box w/out being called out if you contact the ball.

I should have added if 1 foot is on the ground completely outside the box, the batter is out, I didn't mean to imply both feet need to be outside the box for an out but I can see how that part of the answer might be confusing.  Based on the question I was envisioning a batter running 1/2 way to the pp.
