Batter/Runner out or safe and is ball dead

2016/7/15 17:13:30

Question
HS Girls fast pitch softball
Sutuation: Batter hits a ball to the third base player and runs in fair terratory to first base obstructing the firstbasemans ability to catch the ball thrown to the home plate side of first base. Before the runner reaches first the throw hits the runner in the shoulder and deflects the ball into the dugout. First is the runner out? second if the runner is not out is the ball considered out of play and the runner awarded second base?

Answer
Hi Dale,

A b-r would be out if in the umpire's judgment they are outside the 3' lane and they interfere w/ the fielder taking the throw at 1st base.

Not seeing the play, I really have no idea if I have an out here.  This play is also complicated by you stating the throw was to the home side of 1st.  Was it taking F1 into foul territory, ect.

If you don't have an out you do have DB and B1 is awarded 2nd.
