Question
What does inside out theory mean for an umpire?  I am studying to become a certified Dixie Youth umpire and the question is The "inside out theory" means if the ball is hit anywhere on the dirt infield, stay inside the diamond and if the ball is hit anywhere on the grass go outside the diamond.

Answer
Hi cristal,

that would be false,

the inside-out theory means that the BU stays outside the diamond if the ball is hit inside the diamond (IE ground ball to F5) and the BU comes inside the diamond with a button-hook if the ball is hit outside the infield.

By using this theory you keep all 4 elements, the ball, the base, the offense and the defense in front of you.
