Softball Inference

Question
Today, I was in a Varsity softball game.  I was batting when the catcher missed the ball and my teammate on third base started to steal home.  I moved away from the batter's box to clear the plate, but the catcher run into me and with the ball.  The umpire called out the runner for batter inference.  Was this the correct ruling and what should I do next time this situation occurs?

Answer
Debbie,

This is a tough situation to be in.  The rules really don't allow the umpire much room to judge intent on your part.  Based on your description it is very likely that the umpire made the correct call.  To be sure I would have had to see what happened.

When clearing the box for a runner stealing home leave at an angle that takes you towards the 3rd base dugout.
