Question
i have a asa legal softball bat. the bat is under a year old. if i put my ear to the bat and turn it i can hear a rattle, sounds like a little sand in it. the local umpire see me with my ear to my bat and asked what i was doing i told her. she informed me that my bat was illegal. wondering if this is the right interpation of the rules or would the rattling just be a an i indiscation that the bat should be further checked into. and can i still use the bat or is the decision final?? thanks!!

Answer
Hi Lee,

In ASA a bat can have no audible rattles when shaken.  It is each umpire's judgment (or the UIC) on if it is a rattle.  I would have to see (hear) the bat.  A bat that rattles is an illegal bat. Otherwise take it back and get another.
