Overrule

2016/7/15 17:11:10

Question
I was the field umpire on a play that had a double play ball hit to the short stop.  I called the runner at second out and the runner at first safe.  The plate umpire, inexplicably, then called the runner out.  I conferred with him, explaining that he can not overrule my call and that if I thought I was out of position I would ask for help.  One of the members on the defensive team thought the plate umpire could overrule my call.  To my knowledge, NO umpire can overrule any umpires call.  Am I correct and what is the rule?

Answer
Hi John,

ASA 10-3-b Under no circumstances will any umpire seek to reverse a decision made by an associate, nor will any umpire criticize or interfere with the duties of their associate(s) unless asked to do so.

My "partner" and I are going to have a little "chat" and if they understand my position (and the rule) now and forever I'm going to inform the UIC whom I'm sure is going to have a little "chat".
