Question
QUESTION: What is the ruling on a batted ball that is fielded and then the throw to first is wild and goes out of play.  Let's say for arguments sake that there is a runner on 2nd and the runner is on the way to 3rd when the ball goes out of play.

ANSWER: The runner is automatically awarded 2 bases. In your situation, runner on 2nd bases goes home.

QUESTION: You say 2 bases from the last legally possessed base?  What about the batter?

Answer
You can say that from the last legally possessed base but the actual rule is the 2 base award will be governed by the position of the runners when the ball left the fielder's hand. So if a runner is running to 2nd base from 1st base and successfully reaches 2nd base and there was an over throw to 1st base on a fielder's choice. The runner that reached 2nd base goes home. At this point, batter-runner goes to 2nd base.
