Force out/Double play

2016/7/15 17:10:50

Question
ASA Slow-Pitch Men's league. Runners on first and second with nobody out. Ball is hit sharply to the shortstop who fields it close to second base and proceeds to the second base bag. The runner on second never leaves the bag - he is tagged while on the second base bag and then the shortstop touches second. Double play or not? Could you clarify what rules apply. Thanks!!

Answer
Hi doug,

R1 is no longer entitled to legally occupy 2nd since the batter has now become a b-r.  R1 is "forced from" 2nd by that action.  As long as F6 tagged R1 first and then stepped on the bag (forcing R2) we have a double play.  Being on the base is no protection for R1.

The rule is understanding the def of a force play and also ASA 8-7-C The runner is out when on a force play ....tags the runner before reaching the base.

In this case that base means 3rd.
