Question
we have a local team that we have put together for local tourneys. The team is awful. Some of us have played, some more recently than others. And some have not. I want to make the team better, but would like some help doing so. Please point me in the right direction for some online sources on practice drills and basic fundamentals of defensive softball. Thank you.
Answer
I admire you for your initiative. First, try to get your teammates to commit to practice at least twice a week, more would be better. When practicing you should remember that there are 4 basic skills everyone should learn and improve on. Catching, throwing (this includes fielding fly and ground balls) batting and base running and there are 2 specialized skill these are pitching and catching (catcher's skill). These are drills you must do during practice (you can do all in a one day practice or spread it out through out the week). When basics skills are generally ok you must learn the playing positions and their movements.
Lastly, condition everyone physically. It pays to be fit to play a game.
There, these are the things you must remember when making a training program for your team, Good luck!
