Question
Hi Dr.Mark, my question is in reference to the rule pertaining to a runner getting hit by a batted ball. Does the rule state that the runner is out in all instances or is he only out if the defender had a play on the ball.

Answer
Hi Carmen,

if a runner is hit by an untouched batted ball before it passes an infielder exc F1 they would be out.  They would also be out if it passed an infielder exc F1 and another fielder had an opportunity to make an out.

If they were hit on base they would not be out unless they intentionally interfered.  They also would not be out on a deflected batted ball if they could not avoid contact w/ the ball.
