Interference by BR going to 1st base

2016/7/15 17:09:59

Question
ASA Rules except there is no safety base at 1st.  Batter
bunts and runs entire distance to 1st inside fair
territory.  Catcher fields bunt and in trying not to hit
the runner with the ball, throws the ball over runner and
fielders head.  Could this be interference by runner?  Any
difference if the throw hits the runner?

Answer
It could but not likely.  The interference call on this play is interference with the catch at first not the throw.  The umpire has to judge if the runner interfered with the F3's ability to make the play, not F2's ability to throw.  F2 still has to throw to first.  If the throw isn't catchable, no interference.

So if the ball hits the runner in your situation, definately interference.
