Flex Substitution

2016/7/15 17:09:18

Question
QUESTION: The first baseman fielded a ball and on her way to beat the runner the 1B jumped on the base and hit both the white and ornage in advance of the runner reaching the base.
The umpire in charge said she was out becasue the 1B hit a portion of the white.  I can not find in the 2009 ASA Participant Manual and would appreciate clarification adn also where this is addressed inthe Rule Book.

Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Rob,

As long as the fielder touches any part of the white when they are required to do so, it is an out if they beat the b-r.

same for the offense if they touch any part of the color when required to do so it is a safe if the beat the throw.

You can look at 8-2-m-3

as the umpire said, it comes down to either the defense touched the white or they didn't, what else they touch doesn't matter.

QUESTION: Mark,

Thanks for your reply on the double first base.  My next question happened in the same game.  The team on offense entered a substitute to the Flex which I accepted as book keeper.  In the next inning the substitued Flex player came to bat and not for the DP.  I realized but did not want to correct as she was potentially the third out and I wanted to see what the outcome was.  She struck out to the end the inning and I did not say anything to the umpire. I wanted to see if they made the same mistake later in the game as it could potentially work to my favor. In the next inning the team announced that the substituted Flex was replacing the DP in batting order and she came up to bat at a different spot in the order from the last inning.  The team and umpire stated because I did not catch or correct in the last inning that they could have her bat in two different places in the order becasue this was now a legal substitution.  Did I not handle correctly and should I have corrected the batting order after she struck out the first time as an illegal substitute?

Answer
Hi Rob,

I'm confused by your question but I'll see what I can do and write me back if I misunderstood.

the way I read it #1 is the starting Flex, #2 subs for #1.

#2 bats for someone not the DP, you let it go.  #2 now bats in the next inning for the DP.  That's ok because you let the infraction go.
