ASA rule regarding the double base at first base

2016/7/15 17:08:19

Question
Mark,

Batter hits a ball to the SS. The throw is up the line and the batter is unable to run through the orange bag without a collision with the 1B and touches the white bag. The umpire called him out even though the throw was wild and no tag was able to be made. What is the ASA rule on this?

Answer
Hi Harvey,

I would like to have seen what happened but

If the errant throw draws the defense off the white into foul ground the offense and the defense may use either portion.

The intent of the rule is safety and is not a "gotcha" rule
