8U ASA overthrow

Question
Real situation- 8U Coach pitch tournament Kansas ASA rules
Runner on first, batter hits the ball and it is caught by the short stop in the air for an out. The runner at first started running to second then was on her way back to first after the fly ball was caught. The short stop throws the ball to first but it is an overthrow. The ump immediately calls dead ball and awards the runner second base. Was that the correct call? Also what if it is an overthrow but the first baseman goes and gets the ball and tags first before the runner gets back to first base, is it an out? Thanks
Answer
Hi Ranae,
An overthrow is a thrown ball that goes out of play or becomes blocked. In either case the ball is dead.
The award is always 2 bases from the runner's position at time of the throw. The award in this case would be 3rd.
"Also what if it is an overthrow but the first baseman goes and gets the ball and tags first before the runner gets back to first base, is it an out?" No because the ball is dead and bases are award that would be impossible.
