Double base at 1st

2016/7/15 17:07:44

Question
I had one of my batters drag bunt she beat the throw to 1st and was called out because she hit the white base and not the orange base.  I asked the umpire the rule and he stated she needs to touch only the orange base when running to first.  I do not believe this is correct and need clarification.  I thought the orange base is for safety reasons but either base can be touched by the runner.

Answer
It sounds to me like the correct call.  When running to first, the only time the runner can use the white portion of the bag is if F3 switches to the orange side to receive a throw from foul territory.  In other words, the runner must take the side of the base given.  On a routine play from fair territory, you have a correct call.

After the runner touches the base, the base becomes one big base for either the runner or fielder.
