Question
We had a game last night with an incident that promoted a lot of discussion and never was clear to me. Here's what happened; 1 out bases loaded, batter strikes out, catcher drops the ball, assumes "dropped 3rd rule" in effect and scramble to tag batter(who is already out) runners are moving, our coaches tell her to throw to first because runner is almost to 2nd. Ball is overthrown, runner scores, third base coach jogs down 2/3 distance to home plate and the ball is thrown back to catcher. Runner on third scores running from up behind base coach. At the same the runner that ran to second has left the field and returned to the dugout thinking she was out. She then sprints back to 2nd base. The catcher is in disbelief that the play was not dead in that the coach was with in 5 feet of her on the field. I have never seen anything like this before. In the end the plate umpire and base umpire said there was no penalty for coach leaving the box and play was not affected.
Answer
The runner coming home behind the coach could be called out for based on interference from the coach if the umpire judges the actions of the coach were to confuse the defense.
The runner that ran to second was out when she left the field of play.
Other than the batter being out, that is about it.
