does the runner score?

2016/7/15 17:06:55

Question
Hello Dr. Ambrose.

Thank you in advance. Here is the situation. One out with runners on first and third. The batter hits one to the right field which is caught. The runner on first leaves the bag illeagally and is thrown out at first (doubled up)?
The runner on third does tag and reaches home plate before the third out at first. Does the run count?

Thanks again,

Dano Abrams

Answer
Hi Danny,

You're welcome in advance....sure the run would score if R1 touched HP before the appeal of a base left too early on R2.  This is a "timing" play and is not a force out.

I'll even give you the rule....so you can tell whoever, "hey I read the rule"

RS1K. Tag-Ups. When a runner leaves a base too soon on a caught fly ball
and returns in an attempt to retouch, this is considered a time play and
not a force out. When the appeal is the third out, all runs scored in
advance of the appealed runner and prior to the legal appeal count.
