Runner hit while on base

2016/7/15 17:06:28

Question
In ASA slow pitch softball, what if the runner is hit in fair territory while standing on first or third (even if the first or third baseman, respectively is standing right behind them ready to make a play)?

Answer
Hi John,

By rule in this case the ball is dead, b-r is awarded 1st and all other runners only move if forced.  If the closest defensive player was in front of the bag the ball would be live and we play on.  Usually in SP this doesn't happen.

The fact that F3 or F5 can make a play is of no consequence.
