Umpire changed call after appeal, does run score?

2016/7/15 17:05:48

Question
ASA fastpitch.  2 outs, runner on 2nd.  Hit to short, throw is high and 1st baseman pulls foot. But, 1st base ump calls "out." Runner rounds 3rd and heads home.  1st baseman does not throw home as the 3rd out is called.  Appeal is correctly made and umpires correctly reverse call after consultation.  But, the runner is not returned to 3rd and run counts.  Should runner have been returned to 3rd since the third out was "called" before she touched home?  Shouldn't the play have been dead on the wrong call?

Answer
Jon,

You made me do some research on this one all the way to the case book!  This situation doesn't appear anywhere.  But, by extending some other scenarios in the case book. No run scored, runner on third.

When the third out was made, the inning was over.  This of course was a force out and no runs can score on this play.  The girl heading home never reached home as the inning was over prior to her reaching home.  It doesn't really matter if she reached home prior to the force out, because no runs can score when the third out is a force out.  When the call was reversed, the runner is put on the last base legally touched.

The call ended the inning, the appeal should have resumed the inning with two outs and a runner on first and third.
