Questionable calls at first base

Question
We just played a best-of-three series for our division playoff finals and had a field umpire in addition to a plate umpire. There were three plays where our batter-runner beat the throw to first base by half to a full step and yet was called out by the field umpire. I have a feeling this umpire focused his attention at the fielder's glove instead of looking at first base and listening for the ball popping into the glove. Is there any way to reasonably object to these calls? Or are we at the mercy of what I perceive to be bad technique in judging plays at first?
Answer
Hi Mike,
we'll always have differences of opinions on judgment calls. The only thing that may lead to a discussion is if the umpire is not in the proper position, it won't reverse the call usually but.... Out mechanics allow all the elements, the ball, the base, the offense and the defense to be in front of us. We let the ball take us to the play, we would not use the sound of the ball hitting the glove to make a call.
