Throwing glove at a batted ball.

Question
I know that in MLB, throwing a glove at a batted ball (if and only if it makes contact), all runners are awarded 3 bases. Is there a ASA rule involving this same situation? we had a situation in which a runner was on 1st, and the batter hit a ball over shortstop, the shortstop threw his glove, hit the ball and knocked it down, ran out grabbed the ball, and threw the runner (person that was on first) out at 3rd. I called a dead ball, and everyone looked at me like I had 3 heads, --NO ONE ELSE KNEW THIS RULE!..so that was the third out, and the inning ended. so if there is a rule, what is it? Thanks.
Answer
Hi Tim,
you mean THIS rule!
ASA 8-5-F. When a fielder intentionally contacts or catches a fair batted, a thrown, or a
pitched ball with any part of the uniform or equipment that is detached from
its proper place.
EFFECT: Delayed Dead Ball and the batter and runners are entitled to:
1. three bases from the time of the pitch on a batted ball,
2. two bases from the time of the throw on a thrown ball,
3. one base from the time of the pitch on a pitched ball
a. In all games with stealing runners may advance farther with liability
to be put out.
b. A batter is awarded one base only on the third strike in Fast Pitch
and Modified
4. If the illegal catch or touch is made on a fair batted ball which, in the
umpire抯 judgment would have cleared the outfield fence in flight, the
batter-runner shall receive a four base award.
It would not be a dead ball but a delayed dead ball, runners can advance more than the award at their own risk.
