fair or foul ball?

2016/7/15 17:04:51

Question
My brother plays softball on a 2a special olympic softball team.  They lost a game yesterday on what I feel was a bad call.  A batter for the other team hit a ground ball directly down the outside of the first baseline. It was never in fair territory.  The ump called it fair because he said it hit the base and they call all balls that hit the base fair. May I have your opinion on this please?

Answer
Hi Douglas,

If the "base" the umpire is talking about is 1st base, the batted ball would be fair.

FAIR BALL: A legally batted ball that:

E. Touches first, second or third base.

if the base they are talking about is HP the ball would be fair or foul based on where it was when 1st touched or it settles.
