Force Out Rule

2016/7/15 17:03:33

Question
Okay, this really happened in my softball game. The bases were loaded. The batter hit a ground ball to the first baseman. For some reason the runner on first didn't run to second. He just stood on first. So the First baseman tag the bag before the batter got there and also tagged the runner on first who didn't run. So is the runner on first out? The umpire first called a double play but then changed it to the batter was the only one who was out.  I always thought that the runner is forced to run to second. So who is really out here?

Answer
It sounds like the runner on 1st was tagged after the bag was tagged putting the batter out.  Since the batter was put out, the runner was no longer forced to advance, so the runner wasn't out with the tag.

If F3 had tagged the runner first, even while the runner occupied first, prior to the batter being put out, the runner would be out because they were being force to advance and were not protected by being on first. Then you tag the base to put the batter out.

Sounds like your umpire got it right to me.
