Ist base orange bag.

Question
On a recent play at first base, the first basemen fielded the ball and ran to first base to tag the bag, but tagged the orange, not the white half of the bag.  Isn't the orange part reserved for the runner--in order to avoid collisions?

Answer
Hi Ed,

In order for the defense to use the colored portion of the bag on an initial play on the b-r the force out attempt (or throw) must come from foul territory or an errant throw must pull F3 off the white into foul territory.

It sounds from your question F3 fielded a batted ball over fair territory and just ran over to the bag and touched the colored portion.  If so the runner would be not be out.  yes we want to prevent collisions as the rule intends.
