no contact down time for high school

Question
Hello,
I was wondering if you knew if this week was a no contact week for girls softball in Michigan.  I was told by a former H.S. coach that there could be no contact this week between coaches and players.  My daughters softball team has a mandatory player/parent meeting this week and wondered if that would be a violation if in fact there is a no contact rule.

Thank you,
Tammy

Answer
Tammy,

According to the 2009-2010 MHSAA Coaches Guidebook it doesn't appear that the mandatory meeting with the players and parents violates the rules.  The pre-season "down time" is not a no contact period.

The main part of the rule is "No open gyms that involve that sport or sport specific camps or clinics shall occur at the school or be sponsored elsewhere by the school....."

You can get to the MHSAA coaches guidebook by following this link

The information you are looking for is on page 18.

I hope this helps.
