Question
My daughter is a slap hitter, and my question pertains to infielders who play in, and don't cleanly pick up a ball hit at them, and by the time they do the batter is at first. Many of these are being scored as errors? Doesn't this take away from the batter who is forcing these plays to happen?
Answer
This is a difficult situation to score and is why you are much more concerned with on base percentage as opposed to batting average. There can be a large difference between the two for slappers.
You are supposed to give the benefit of the doubt to the hitter. For instance, if I think the batter would likely have reached first on a cleanly fielded ball, I score a hit.
Long story short, if it is scored an error, it hurts the BA.
Any coach that knows what they are looking at won't care about BA as long as they are on base a bunch!
