Use of orange side of first base

Question
QUESTION: There's a debate in our league about when and who can use the orange side of first base. Our league is new to ASA which may be part of the confusion.  On a dropped 3rd strike, can the first baseman set up on the orange side of the base to make the out?  What is the purpose of the orange side of first base?

ANSWER: Hi John,

It's pretty simple..when a play is being made on a batted ball  the defense must use the white and the offense must use the colored except if the throw is coming from the foul side of 1st base or an errant throw draws the fielder into foul territory, the defense may use either bag as can the offense.

On a ball hit to the outfield if no play is being made the runner can use the white portion.  Once 1st base has been safely achieved the whole thing becomes 1 big base

The purpose is to prevent collisions at 1st base.

QUESTION: Thank you Mark.  Not to beat a dead horse, on a dropped 3rd strike where the ball gets behind the catcher and the catcher makes the throw near the left side of the plate (1st base line side of plate), the first baseman can set up on the orange side of the base, correct?

Answer
Hi John,

I'm an animal lover, have 3 dogs, please don't beat a live horse...........and while beating a dead horse might make it more tender, as it is a noble beast I would not eat it....as long as the throw is coming from foul territory, correct.

Simple....Behind or to the side of hp you bet, in front of hp, no
