Question
two outs runner on third batter strikes out but catcher drops ball and it gets away far enough for runner on third to try to score catcher picks up ball to tag runner from third but misses and runner is safe. Meanwhile the batter notices that catcher dropped the third strike and finally decides to run to first but catcher throws out batter at first. in this game they counted the run saying that the runner from third crossed home before the batter was thrown out at first. Is not this still a force out at first and thus no runner can score if the final out of an inning is a force out?
Answer
Hi Mike,
No, No No!!!! by rule NO run can score w/ 2 outs if the b-r doesn't safely attain 1st base. Doesn't matter if R1 crossed the plate 1st or not! This is umpiring 101, bad call by an inexperienced umpire and should have been protested by the coach.
