Question
With a runner on 2nd a grounder is hit just to the left of the SS but not in the gap. The runner runs in front of the fielder as she approaches the ball. SS hesitates / slows down than proceeds to the ball making contact with the runner's back and unable to field the ball. Should this be ruled interference on the runner? Is this a timing play umpires can say she wouldn't have made the play or the ball was past the runner before contact was made? Does there have to be contact before interference is called?
Answer
HI Don,
ASA RS 33. INTERFERENCE.
Interference is the act of an offensive player or team member that impedes,
hinders or confuses a defensive player attempting to execute a play.
Interference may be in the form of physical contact, verbal distraction, visual
distraction, or any type of distraction that hinders a fielder in the execution
of a play. Defensive players must be given the opportunity to field the ball
anywhere on the playing field or throw the ball without being hindered.
Descriptions such as this is difficult. I would have to see this play but there is a good possibility there was interference. The runner must not enter or must vacate any space needed for the defense to field the ball.
It is not a timing play or the fact that it passed the runner and contact is not necessary for there to be interference. Did the defense have a legitimate chance to make a play? and did the runner hinder, that's the question.
