ASA Girls Softball Batting Helmet

2016/7/15 16:59:54

Question
My daughter tends to be highly susceptible to glare. When she's batting she wears sunglasses, but it's uncomfortable under her helmet. I've seen that tinted "eyeshields" are available to affix to the mask of the helmet. My concern is that an "equipment picky" umpire is going to make a stink about it and want it removed. I can't find any ASA rules pertaining to batting helmets and eyeshields. Although there is a rule that if a catcher has an eyeshield on the helmet it must be clear/non-tinted. Is there a rule that says a batters helmet can or cannot have an eyeshield, and if so, can it be tinted?

Answer
Matthew,

Sorry for the delay in answering this, I had to find some time to look it up.

In reference to helmets and the face mask/guard the 2010 rule book just states that the "mask/guard" must be NOCSAE approved.  I think that an "eyeshield" would be considered part of the mask/guard only if it was integral to the mask/guard.  Find one that is NOCSAE approved and integral to the mask/guard and you should be good to go.

The rules do not talk about eyeshields as being legal equipment.  I would not let one in the game other than outlined above.  The NOCSAE seal indicates that the approved equipment has met certain safety standards.

Additionally I don't see anything under equipment in the 2010 rule book that allows an eyeshield on a catcher's mask either.  The language under catcher's equipment regarding mask/guards is similar to the language under batting helmets.
