Question
At the end of the top of the 1st inning the visiting pitcher is given the ball that did not go out of play during the top of the inning.  Before she pitches to the first batter she takes the ball and rubs it in the dirt by the pitchers plate.  I'm sure this is an illegal pitch but I also think that she may be ejected for defacing the ball, is that correct?

Answer
By rule an illegal pitch.  No ejection.  If it happens again, ejection.  It is an extension of the rule about applying a foreign substance to the ball.

What am I going to do in reality, prior to the actual pitch, retrieve the ball from the pitcher give her another ball, tell her not to do it again.  I will rub out the ball that was in the dirt and if not damaged, put it in the game.
