Protest an umpires call

2016/7/15 16:59:48

Question
Dr. Amrose,
How should a coach protest or discuss a call made by the umpire?  Do you call time?  Do you just walk up to the umpire and start talking to him?  What is the correct protocol?
Doug

Answer
Hi Doug,

You can't call time but you might ask if the ball is live, "Blue, can I have time I would like to talk with you, please" or something similar.  If a dead ball, "Blue, I would like to talk with you please" and approach them.  Then state calmly your concerns and allow the umpire to answer.  Please stay out of the umpire's "physical space"  An arm length away is good.

Of course you could also run up screaming, ranting and hollering but usually that doesn't get you very far.
